Organizational Description: We are the Company of Poets - Winnipeg's travelling group of Poets. Since late 2022 we have visited 69 separate and distinct 55+ centres, care homes, rehab centers, hospitals & churches. Our typical program includes up to 3 volunteer poets reading to groups as large as 90, but typically 10 to 25. Our programs are FREE to attend and we do not charge for our unique services.

Description of Duties:

Poet Laureate? Company of Poets, Winnipeg's largest traveling poetry group requires a Poet Laureate Trainee to assist with presentations. Original poetry geared to 55+. Must have own transport to various Winnipeg care homes & 55+ centers. Since 2022 we have presented 70 unique poetry events. WE NEED YOU.

   
Skills Required:

Basic literary skills required. Affinity to our beloved senior's population an asset. Hope in your heart - words from your mind. Humor and pathos both accepted. We will consider more than one trainee if circumstances dictate. Please submit a short but creative application to our founder or co-founder.

   
Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Possible careers include teaching and affiliated poetry presentations. Our literary aunts and uncles include but not limited to: Leonard Cohen, Gwendolyn MacEwen, Al Purdy, Milton Acorn, Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder, William Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, Charles Olson & Donald Bailey. Our poets gain strength and insight via regular out-loud readings using professional sound systems and attentive audiences. A great supplement to the solitary writing process.

Most of our events are held in early to mid-afternoons on a weekday basis. We also hold the odd reading and recital in early evening and weekend hours. While we are a Seniors Poetry Program, you do not have to be 55+ to qualify as volunteer trainee. Younger people under 55 with the right spirit and attitude always welcome.
