Organizational Description: | 24-hour info and support, and short term protective shelter for women who are experiencing intimate partner, gender-based or family violence. Other supports include: children's services, men's services, outreach counselling, follow up program, referral services, and and public education. Description of Duties: | Lead informal activities with adult and child violence prevention shelter participants, such as crafts and games; provide child-minding; help with household tasks such as vacuuming, sweeping, tidying; support staff with donations and supplies (organizing, storing); willingness to help as needed with shelter participants - staff are always present. |
Skills Required: | Experience with children, group activity experience, patience, gentleness and calmness; confident, motivated, models unconditional positive regard for others, resourceful and creative; good judgment; understands trauma-informed approaches to support; takes direction; life-long learner, non-judgmental; self-aware, cultural competency; adaptable and flexible, reliable, active listener, team-oriented. |
Skills Gained/Related Careers: | Ideal for those with interest or background in social services, childcare and daycare, teaching, congregate living support, shelter services, psychology, sociology and counseling; women's and gender studies, family law or criminal law, policing, therapeutic health or mental health services; healthcare/nursing/medicine, community support work. Skills gained include working with diverse, vulnerable populations, understanding of family violence and gender-based violence, understanding the impacts of violence, understanding how violence prevention shelters help survivors with recovery and healing; experience working with children and adults in a crisis setting. |

Time Commitment: | Daytime , Evening , Weekend , Flexible Hours We provide comprehensive training and orientation for those accepted into our volunteer program. No-cost adult and child abuse registry back-checks can be obtained through our volunteer training program. A minimum commitment of one-year and 2-3 hours weekly is expected. Hours are flexible based on volunteer availability. Ideally, volunteers will be open to helping as needed in a variety of areas of the shelter program (activities, donations, household tasks). |
