Organizational Description: The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) was established in 1997 as a non-profit organization with a vision to provide a structured basketball league for Winnipeg area youth, open for all to participate. The league tipped off with 40 teams, based out of 12 Community Centers. The WMBA now supports over 200 teams and offers 6 leagues and programs, spanning all age groups.

Description of Duties:


The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) is seeking passionate individuals to join our dynamic team of dedicated volunteers on our Board of Directors. If you are enthusiastic about the development of youth through the sport of basketball and are committed to making a positive impact in our community, we invite you to apply for this exciting opportunity.

About the WMBA:


The WMBA is a non-profit organization that has been an integral part of the Winnipeg basketball community for 26 years. Our mission is to provide a positive and inclusive environment for all Winnipeg and surrounding area youth, coaches, referees, and families by promoting the sport of basketball through a community-based program. We offer various programs and leagues for players of all skill levels, creating opportunities for growth and teamwork.

Role and Responsibilities:


As the Board member responsible for oversight of Media/promotions/sponsorships/communications, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the WMBA. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development and implementation of the organization's strategic plan.
Governance: Participate in Board and District convenor meetings, provide input on policies, and ensure compliance with relevant requirements.
Media promotions, Communications, Fundraising and Sponsorship: Assist in securing financial support to sustain and enhance WMBA programs. Review media and promotional opportunities with Board and Executive Board members and the Executive Director with the view of providing guidance to implement appropriate plans.
Community Engagement: Foster positive relationships with stakeholders, including parents, coaches, players, and local partners.
Advocacy: Advocate for the growth and development of basketball at the youth level within the community.

Commitment: A passion for sports and its contribution to the health and development of our youth in the community. Willingness to dedicate time and effort to attend board and executive meetings and events, as well as contribute to ongoing initiatives.


Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals and contribute to a positive team culture.


Vision: A forward-thinking mindset with ideas to contribute to the continuous improvement of WMBA programs.


Experience: Background or interest in media relations and concepts including implementation knowledge and experience would be helpful but we welcome everyone with interest in this field to consider this opportunity.

Board meetings are held in the evening on the last Wednesday of the month. The board position would involved discussions and potential meetings with our Executive Director and President
