Organizational Description: The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) is Canada's first community-based, non-profit professional jazz orchestra. Founded in 1997, the WJO has matured to become an important part of Winnipeg's cultural landscape.

The mission of the WJO is to be at the forefront of developing big band jazz through performing, recording, composing, education and community building by means of outreach, inclusion and collaboration.

Description of Duties:

We are seeking volunteers with diverse backgrounds who are willing to take on responsibilities such as:
● Organizational direction and decision making
● Financial oversight and monitoring
● Ensuring legal compliance
● Attending and participating in board meetings
● Taking part in fundraising efforts
● Supporting and attending WJO concerts and events

We are currently recruiting for volunteers with skills and experience in HR, sponsorships, social media, IT/cybersecurity, and fundraising, though would encourage any interested individuals with a passion for music and volunteering to apply.

Joining the board of the WJO provides the opportunity to help us foster big band music for its potential to nuture empathy, create human connection, and contribute to a more compassionate society. As well, board members will have the opportunity to learn more about board governance and Winnipeg's wonderful arts community.

Flexible Hours

Board meetings are held in the evening once per month from September to June, and are currently a mix of online and in-person meetings. Each board member must also participate on a committee. The time commitment for meetings (attendance and preparation) will usually vary between 2-5 hours per month depending on committee activity, and all board terms are two years. In addition, board members must become a "subscriber" of the WJO, for either a partial or full season (usually starts at 4 concerts per year).
