Organizational Description: L'Arche Winnipeg is a vibrant disability services organization that is primarily located in Transcona and St. Boniface. For over 50 years, we have been actively supporting, creating homes, and facilitating social and employment opportunities for about 25 people living with intellectual disabilities. Our diverse community includes six houses, one Supported Independent Living unit, the L'Arche Tova Café and an extended network of friends who are passionate about creating a world where all people can thrive.

Description of Duties:

Since 1973, we have pioneered a family model of care in Winnipeg, where people with and without intellectual disabilities live and work together in mutual relationships. While many disability agencies operate using a medical or social service model of care - seeing people with disabilities as patients or clients to be helped - L'Arche operates using a human rights model, believing that each person, no matter their ability, has value and contributes unique gifts to our community.


L'Arche Winnipeg provides family-style housing to people with intellectual disabilities in 6 homes located in Transcona and St. Boniface. House Friends volunteer to spend quality time with our members with disabilities, developing mutual friendships by playing games, making crafts, baking, gardening, watching movies, or going on outings throughout the city.

   
Skills Required:

- Friendly, flexible, patient, empathetic, respectful, and reliable


- Good listening and communication skills


- Ability to initiate and follow through on plans


- Openness to mutual friendship with people with intellectual disabilities


- Minimum age requirement is 18


- 3 references are required


- Clear Criminal Record Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check are required

Shceduling will be arranged with our homes, but volunteers are expected to commit to once per week or bi-weekly, with a minimum year commitment.
