HSC Volunteers fill a variety of roles in adult patient care, the Children's Hospital, retail and food services, PsycHealth, Rehab Hospital etc.

Description of Duties:

Purpose



  • To support Health Sciences Centre's Patients First mission by engaging in leisure activities that may present some challenges, but overall allow them to practice new skills in a welcoming, social environmentTo support Health Sciences Centre's Patients First mission by engaging in leisure activities that may present some challenges, but overall allow them to practice new skills in a welcoming, social environment


Responsibilities



  • Provide a fun afternoon/evening of board games for patients on the unit

  • Collect supplied gmaes from Volunteer Services office and bring them to the unit

  • Motivate patients to participate without being forceful or demanding

  • Sign-in and out at Volunteer Services

  • Follow the pledge of confidentiality (Personal Health Information Act)


Length of Commitment and Availability



  • We require a consistent commitment of one regular 1.5 hour shift per week

  • A minimum of 6-month consistent commitment of volunteering

  • Schedule changes will need to be approved by your administrator

  • Must have weekday daytime availability

  • Verification or a statement of volunteer hours can be provided by the Volunteer Services Department

   
Skills Required:

  • Volunteers must be 18 years and older.

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time

  • Comfortable kneeling, crouching, and or bending occasionally

  • Ability to maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards

  • Ability to push equipment (i.e wheelchairs with a patient, carts with equipment)

  • All volunteers must be immune to chicken pox as patients are particularly vulnerable to infections. If you are unsure, please ask your healthcare provider

  • Volunteer Services will complete a free Adult and Child Abuse Registry Check during orientation
