Description of Duties:

Overview:
HSDE Canada is seeking passionate and dedicated volunteer math teachers to support immigrants, refugees, and newcomers in Winnipeg. Volunteers will provide math instruction to students at various levels, from basic arithmetic to high school math. This role plays a key part in helping newcomers succeed academically, improve their problem-solving skills, and pursue future educational and career opportunities.


Key Responsibilities:
- Math Instruction:
- Teach basic math skills (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) as well as more advanced topics such as algebra, geometry, and calculus, depending on the students' needs.
- Develop and implement lesson plans based on students' academic levels, learning goals, and school curriculum requirements.
- Use creative and interactive methods to engage students and make math accessible and enjoyable.



- Individualized Support:
- Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to address specific math challenges faced by students.
- Tailor lessons and explanations to each student's pace of learning, ensuring they grasp key mathematical concepts.
- Help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through practical applications of math.


- Academic Mentorship:
- Guide students in understanding and completing math homework and preparing for school exams.
- Build confidence in students' mathematical abilities and encourage them to pursue further studies in STEM fields.
- Share strategies for managing time, reducing anxiety during exams, and improving overall academic performance.


- Administrative Support:
- Track students' progress and attendance.
- Provide feedback to the Program Coordinator regarding students' development and any challenges faced during instruction.
- Assist in preparing and organizing learning materials and resources.

   
Skills Required:

Qualifications:
- Proficient in mathematics at a high school or post-secondary level.
- Previous experience teaching or tutoring math (preferred but not required).
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain mathematical concepts clearly and patiently.
- Passion for helping newcomers overcome academic barriers.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and adapt teaching methods to meet varied learning needs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
