Description of Duties:

Overview:
HSDE Canada is seeking enthusiastic volunteer digital literacy teachers to support immigrants, refugees, and newcomers in Winnipeg. Volunteers will teach basic and intermediate digital literacy skills to help participants improve their computer proficiency and access essential online services, education, and employment opportunities. This role is vital in empowering newcomers to thrive in a digital world.


Key Responsibilities:
- Digital Skills Instruction:
- Teach basic computer skills, including how to use email, internet browsing, word processing, and spreadsheets.
- Educate students on the use of common software and online tools (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Office).
- Provide instruction on online safety, privacy, and cybersecurity to protect personal information.


- Practical Application:
- Teach participants how to navigate online services such as banking, job applications, health services, and government resources.
- Assist students in setting up and using social media, video conferencing, and other communication platforms to stay connected with their communities and families.


- Customized Support:
- Tailor lessons based on participants' specific needs and current skill levels.
- Provide one-on-one tutoring or small group sessions to reinforce learning.
- Help participants gain confidence in using digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers.


- Mentorship and Encouragement:
- Support students in overcoming technical challenges and building confidence in their digital skills.
- Serve as a mentor, offering guidance and encouragement to help them apply these skills in real-world situations (e.g., job searches, school assignments).


- Administrative Support:
- Track participants' progress and provide feedback to the Program Coordinator.
- Assist with organizing learning materials and resources.
- Ensure the learning environment is welcoming and conducive to learning.

   
Skills Required:

Qualifications:
- Proficient in using computers, the internet, and common software applications.
- Experience teaching or tutoring digital literacy (preferred but not required).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and an understanding of the challenges faced by immigrants, refugees, and newcomers.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
- Knowledge of online safety practices and cybersecurity awareness.
