Description of Duties:

HSDE Canada is seeking dedicated volunteers to provide schoolwork and homework support to immigrants, refugees, and newcomer students in Winnipeg through an after-school program. Volunteers will assist students with a variety of subjects, helping them understand and complete their assignments, improve academic performance, and adjust to the Canadian education system. This role is vital in empowering newcomers to succeed in their studies and build confidence in their academic abilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Homework Assistance:
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with their homework, ensuring they understand and complete their assignments on time.
- Assist students with a variety of subjects, including math, science, English, and social studies.
- Help students improve their study skills, organization, and time management.


- Academic Support:
- Help students understand difficult concepts and lessons taught in school, providing additional explanation and practice where needed.
- Tailor your approach to each student's academic level and individual needs.
- Offer extra support in preparing for exams, tests, or projects.


- Mentorship and Encouragement:
- Provide encouragement and guidance to help students build confidence in their academic abilities.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor, offering advice on school, social integration, and future goals.
- Help students set academic goals and develop strategies for achieving them.


- Collaborative Learning Environment:
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for students of diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Encourage students to collaborate and support one another in their learning journey.


- Administrative Support:
- Track student attendance and progress, and provide feedback to the Program Coordinator.
- Assist in preparing educational materials and organizing activities that enhance students' learning experiences.

   
Skills Required:

Qualifications:
- Proficient in at least one or more core academic subjects (e.g., math, science, English, social studies).
- Previous experience tutoring or teaching (preferred but not required).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain academic concepts clearly and effectively.
- Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping newcomers succeed academically.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and adapt teaching methods to suit different learning styles.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
