Description of Duties:

Swimmingly is currently looking for volunteer instructors to teach swimming lessons to children with exceptional needs! Our programs run at Elmwood Kildonan Pool (909 Concordia Avenue) and St. James Civic Centre (2055 Ness Avenue). Lessons occur on Saturday evenings and run for 10 weeks, in 1.5 hour blocks. Our winter session begins in January of 2025.

Swimmingly instructors come from diverse backgrounds but all are dedicated student volunteers.

Skills Required:

In addition to strong swimming skills, qualified applicants will have:

  • Teaching experience (preferably, but not necessarily, swimming-related)

  • Experience working with children

  • Experience working with persons with disabilities

Swimmingly is a non-certificate program, therefore possession of valid certifications (such as NLS or WSI) is not a formal requirement to becoming an instructor (although it is a strong asset). A fully certified lifeguard is always on duty during lessons.

Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Skills you will gain:

  • Adaptability and problem-solving: working with children with exceptional needs requires creative approaches to teaching.

  • Communication: crucial when interacting with children, their families, and other volunteers.

  • Empathy and patience: working with children with a wide range of physical, developmental, emotional, and social needs helps develop these skills.

  • Teaching and instruction: learn how to tailor teaching strategies and structure lessons to meet the different needs of our participants.

  • Safety awareness: reinforce the importance of safety protocols in a water-based environment.
