Organizational Description: Volunteer Services is dedicated to improving patient care and the quality of life for patients, visitors and staff at the Health Sciences Centre. HSC Volunteers fill a variety of roles in adult patient care, the Children's Hospital, retail and food services, PsycHealth, Rehab Hospital etc.

Description of Duties:

Purpose



  • To support Health Sciences Centre's Patients First mission by providing support and companionship to patients during mealtime


Responsibilities



  • Remind patients of their glasses or dentures if applicable

  • Turn on the lights for better lighting

  • Tidy up the tray table so there is room for the food tray

  • Place the food tray within arm's reach of the patient

  • Open packages and lids

  • Offer to cut up foods

  • Describe the food *can refer to tray ticket

  • Remove empty trays when patients are finished eating

  • Engage patients in friendly conversation (if time permits, play cards, read the paper etc)

  • Sign-in and out at Volunteer Services

  • Follow the pledge of confidentiality (Personal Health Information Act)

   
Skills Required:

  • Volunteers must be 18 years and older.

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time

  • Walk various distances through the hospital

  • Comfortable kneeling, crouching, and or bending occasionally

  • Ability to maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards

  • Ability to safely hold and or carry equipment/children up to 20-40lbs

  • Ability to push equipment (i.e wheelchairs with a patient, carts with equipment)

  • All volunteers must be immune to chicken pox as patients are particularly vulnerable to infections. If you are unsure, please ask your healthcare provider

  • Volunteer Services will complete a free Adult and Child Abuse Registry Check.
