Organizational Description: Urban Stable provides Equine Facilitated Learning Programs to youth in grades 5-9 through four unique programs. Equine Facilitated Learning is an experiential learning approach that promotes the development of life skills for educational, professional and personal goals through equine activities.

Urban Stable is an accredited Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA) centre and follows the high standards and safety guidelines provided by them.

Our Mission: Urban Stable empowers youth to engage in their education and community and achieve personal success through hands-on learning experiences with horses.

Description of Duties:

Volunteer Horse Handlers support the students one-on-one in our hands-on learning program with horses. They assist the students to groom, lead and ride their horse. Horse Handler Volunteers will mainly lead the horse and rider.

   
Skills Required:

Horse experience required.
Experience working with youth, at risk youth, or those with disabilities preferred.
Be available during the day (Tues., Wed., Thurs.)
Able to transport self to program location (located 15 mins north of perimeter near Stonewall, MB).
Able to attend volunteer orientation on Tuesday Jan. 21 10am-11am and Training Jan. 28 & Feb. 3rd.
Volunteer hours: 2 hour class per week, for 14 weeks Feb.-June.
Winter/Spring session starts Feb. 11th, 2025.
Able to walk for about 1 hour and jog for brief periods in sand footing arena.

Volunteers are asked to commit to one class per week for (10 weeks in the fall) and 14 weeks in the winter / spring to provide consistency to the students and horses.


Volunteer sessions are 2 - 2.25 hours each week. We kindly ask if volunteers can stay for a brief time after the class to assist with cleaning up the barn and arena after the class.
Volunteer sessions are either mornings (10:00am-12:00pm) or afternoons (1:30pm -3:30pm) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.
