Strategies for Accessible Community Engagement

'Nothing about us without us' is a phrase being used by advocacy groups, agencies and government. This refers to the idea that decisions shouldn't be made about people without their input. Government, as well as community organizations and corporations are realizing that they need to make their community engagement strategies more accessible and are actively look for better ways to reach out. This workshop would look at what opportunities for accessible community engagement exist in the non-profit sector.

Goal of the workshop:

  • Help non-profits analyze their current engagement strategies and develop new methods to engage their stakeholders in a way that's accessible.
  • Organizations would leave with ideas on how to make their engagement more accessible for stakeholders.

Workshop focus:

  • Discussion on different ways to engage people and support that might be needed.
  • Development and communication of materials in easy to understand language; benefits and examples.
  • Strategies for focus groups for stakeholders with unique support needs.
  • Strategies for utilizing stakeholders more fully in community engagement.

Facilitator:

Monica Schroeder brings over 15 years of experience working in community development, with a focus on social enterprise and food access programming. She has an Executive Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Trinity Western University, with ongoing studies in Change Management at the University of Manitoba.

Monica draws on a variety of grassroots programming experiences and is skilled in grant and report-writing, workforce training and marketing for non-profits. She has been involved with various boards and advisory councils and is the current Board Chair for SSCOPE Inc, a Winnipeg social enterprise.

In 2017, Monica started Night Sky Consulting, a venture focusing on communication and change management for small businesses and non-profit organizations. Whether it's developing communication tools or creating change management plans, Monica is a creative communicator with a passion for moving organizations forward.

Who should take this course:

Anyone who want to start using email marketing to share information about their non-profit!

Technical requirements:

To participate virtually, you will need a computer/mobile device with an internet connection, speakers and a microphone. A webcam is preferred but optional.
