Foundations of Emotional Literacy: The Biology of our Emotions and their Impact on Learning, Engagement, and Connection

Regardless of your workplace, whether an office job, on the front lines of the service industry, or in the field of education, this workshop has insights and knowledge that can nurture your overall health, reduce the impacts of stress, assist in understanding your needs and boundaries, and help to facilitate an optimal learning/working environment.

In this interactive workshop participants will learn about the anatomy of our emotions and how they have developed as an evolutionary tool to ensure our survival. We will dive into the science behind our nervous system responses and how these responses impact our ability to learn, solve problems, and connect with others. Through this knowledge, we will learn to identify states of emotional activation and collapse and work with these states to nurture resiliency, confidence, and self-regulation strategies.

Facilitator:

Kris Garner is the founder, program developer, and lead instructor of The Emotional Literacy Movement, a grassroots organization that aims to make emotional literacy education more accessible to educational organizations and the community at large. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of education and child care, with 10 of those years spent as a teacher in the public school system. Noticing the high rates of teacher burnout and declining mental health in her students (and herself), Kris left her career and began a 7 year journey of rigorous self study in the fields of trauma informed practices, Polyvagal Theory, holistic psychology, and the arts as traditional healing modalities. Today, she works with various non-profit organizations, schools and child care facilities to increase education and awareness around the inner workings of our nervous system and how understanding the function of our emotions can lead to a happier, healthier, and more productive life. Additionally, she sits as secretary on the board and is the chair of the Education and Programming and Events & Fundraising committees for the not-for-profit organization Seeds of Life Alliance.
