Beyond DEI Statement: How Can the Board Govern From a Racial Justice Lens
February 27, 2023 12:00 AM
It is critical to create a respectful and safe workspace among diverse, racial, and culturally mixed organizations. We saw a rise of the Position Statement in response to some of the painful events such as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, the surge in anti-Asian racism resulting from the global pandemic as well as the death of Mr. George Floyd. The world has been forced to face the undeniable reality of the impact of colonization on our society, our communities, and our organizations.
The training focuses on capacity building for governance and senior organization leaders to develop racial justice practices as an integral part of the boardroom space. In this training we aim to raise awareness and inspire a thorough examination of our organizational structures and leadership styles to eliminate micro aggression and exclusion practices as well as to build an environment where everyone belongs and are included.
Topics Covered Include:
Workshop participants will gain knowledge in the following areas:
- Recognizing the ways that systemic racism and other oppressions manifest in organizations and impacts employees, affiliates, and the communities we serve
- Deepening our understanding of the impact of privilege and power we carry on non-profit governance board
- Common pitfalls and misperceptions of DEI
- Exploring ways to implement racial justice practices in the boardroom
- Visioning an anti-racist equitable organization
