Volunteer Recruitment through a Rural Lens

Volunteers are necessary and critical to deliver the missions of many organizations. Is it different to engage with people in rural communities? There are different opportunities and challenges with rural community engagement where many of the urban networks and strategies are not applicable. This session is for anyone who is working with rural organizations and communities, and wants to explore a different lens for volunteer engagement. We will discuss recruitment needs, and the value of investing in volunteer relationships. If you are wanting a refresher or a chance to connect about volunteering in our rural communities, this is for you!
Why is this important for a Volunteer Engager to attend?
Are you struggling to find volunteers in your rural communities? Are all small rural communities the same? If you are wanting to expand your recruitment outreach strategies or looking for an opportunity to connect with volunteer engagers from rural communities, then this session is for you! We will work through a case study and you will take home a recruitment tool you can use over and over again.
Learning Objectives:
1. Be familiar with the Volunteer Management Life Cycle and identify the value of recruitment as a phase in the Volunteer Management Life Cycle
2. Identify the different types of volunteers in their area and their recruitment needs in rural communities.
3. Compile a list of potential avenues for volunteer recruitment.
4. Find ways to support and retain the current volunteers.
Who should attend:
Those responsible for supervising volunteers. Participants can include Executive Directors, Program Managers, Board Members, Committee Members, Volunteer Managers, Coordinators and anyone who is interested in learning more about this topic.
Facilitator:
From the time of eight, as a Girl Guide Brownie, Ruth has experienced the value of community volunteering. Ruth's passion for volunteerism led her to join the non-profit sector a decade ago from the accounting sector.
She shares her knowledge through training and facilitation sessions. She is often found in conversations advocating for people to be involved in their communities, and recruiting the next volunteer for her community.
Ruth believes non-profits are an integral connection in our communities that all benefit from whether we are the recipient or the giver. She is a strong believer in the engagement of volunteers in meaningful work and was originally certified in Volunteer Administration in 2014, and re-certified in 2019. She served on the Volunteer Management Professionals of Canada from 2014-2022 and was President from 2018-2020. She volunteers with the Osteoporosis Canada Peer and the Oxford County Accessibility Advisory Committee.
Technical requirements:
To participate virtually, you will need a computer/mobile device with internet connection, speakers and microphone. A webcam is preferred but optional.
