Organizational Description: Volunteer Services is dedicated to improving patient care and the quality of life for patients, visitors and staff at the Health Sciences Centre. HSC Volunteers fill a variety of roles in adult patient care, the Children's Hospital, retail and food services, PsycHealth, Rehab Hospital etc.

Description of Duties:

-Provide play/interaction/friendly support to patients.
-May be asked to assist parents with supervision of siblings.
-Assist Child Life Specialist with program events and seasonal decorating.
-Tidy and help maintain organization of play equipment and supplies.
-May be asked to escort patients to school or play programs such as Playroom, CHTV and Library.
-Clean toys.

   
Skills Required:

-Experience with children.
-Enjoys being with children of all ages.
-Comfortable working with hospitalized children.
-Comfortable with approaching and interacting with the public and patients in a friendly, supportive manner.
-Able to express oneself clearly and concisely in the English Language.
-Possess an awareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences.
-Physically and mentally capable of performing responsibilities, including walking distances, pushing wheelchairs.
-Physical demands may include crouching, stretching, kneeling activities and lifting and holding children as well as pushing and pulling wheelchairs and beds.
-Physically and emotionally tolerant of unpleasant sights, sounds and odors.
-Neat and clean in appearance.
-Knowledge of or willingness to learn about HSC services.
-Display a mature, confident disposition with ability to respond appropriately.
-Understands professional conduct (tactful, diplomacy, confidentiality, respecting boundaries).
-Adhere to all hospital safety and infection control policies.
-Must have passed a Criminal Record Check.
-Must have passed a Child Abuse Registry Check.
